The Hungarian Ministry for Environment and Water ((Magyar Környezetvédelmi és Vízügyi Minisztérium, KvVM) is the governmental institution, responsible for the environmental, nature conservation and water issues and policies. http:// www.kvvm.hu.

There was launched a scientific, strategic plan, for the years 2003-2007, titled "The Current Status and Future Objectives of Research and Development in the Areas of Environmental Conservation and Water Affairs”. One of its main direction is ”Biodiversity and the protection of living and non-living natural assets”.
In 2003 was launched the 2th National Environmental Programme for the years of 2003-2008. One of its main direction is "Biodiversity and Natureconservation".

The Hungarian Ministry for Environment and Water (Magyar Környezetvédelmi és Vízügyi Minisztérium) is responsible for the coordination of some environmental research in Hungary. There is a MoU between the ministry and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) on support and coordination of Hungarian projects on Biodiversity Research:

Hungarian National Biodiversity monitoring System Coordinated by The Ministry for Environment and Water (KvVM).

  • Long Term Ecological Research Network, site Kiskunság forest steppe, Sikfõkut oak forest, Lake Balaton. Coordinator: Institute of Ecologyand Botany of HAS, (IEB, HAS).
  • GTOS/NPP Project, Global Terrestrial Observation System/Net Primary Productivity Project, site Kiskunság,Orgovány, coordinator: IEB, HAS.
  • EPBRS European Platform for Biodiversity Research, coordinator: MEW and IEB, HAS, SBSTA.
  • Hungarian National Bioplatform, coordinated by IEB, HAS, linked to the European Bioplatform.
  • ALTERNET EU FW6 Project, coordination “Long Term sites and biodiversity research” in 18 Hungarian countries with 26 institutions, IEB HAS,

Moreover the Hungarian Bioplatform is linked to the European Bioplatform, in which the Hungarian partner is Prof. Edit Láng (IEB, HAS) and will be valuable tool for the acquirement of information needed for the planned project.

Biodiversity and related research
Biodiversity and related research and programmes are tasks of National parks and specialised organisation.The ministry of Environment and Water is in charge of all this National parks and their mangement. No separate budget lines are available apart three projects ( Evaluation of the State of the Environment, Sustainable Water Management and Global Climate Change) financed by the ministry within a three year co-operation agreement with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (of which 2005 is the last year), have a total value of 100 million Hungarian Forints (ie 400 000 € ) for this final year.
