Scope

The call is for proposals for international scientific research projects that:

1. link scientific advancement to challenges in biodiversity policy and conservation management;
2. generate new knowledge and insights with the eventual goal of use in policy and management;

3.generate added value to national research projects across Europe by linking expertise and efforts across national teams.

Themes

Research questions can be of fundamental or more applied nature but should meet internationally high standards of scientific quality. Research must aim to link scientific advances to policy and/or practice.

Projects should address one or more of the following themes:

1. Global change and biodiversity dynamics: impacts of climate change on biodiversity and impacts of biodiversity on climate change; impacts of habitat loss, of biological invasions, of ecosystem conversion and of landscape fragmentation on biodiversity dynamics; ecosystem responses to human-induced changes; conservation models to cope with impacts of global change.

2. Ecosystem functioning: understanding the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning and management of ecosystems at any level; especially exploited ecosystems in the context of global change.

3. Ecosystem services: identification, evaluation and integration of ecosystem services in project assessment methodology; use of economic tools for evaluating ecosystem services; and modelling the impact of public policies (e.g. economic policy, infrastructure, land use and maritime planning, renewable resource management, health etc.) and private sector strategies on ecosystem services; perception and conflict management.

The call is open to research on all ecosystems and organisms. The challenges are considered to be of equal importance across all types of ecosystems: aquatic, marine and terrestrial.
